FAQ

Which is the best layout for a vegetable garden?

Your location will determine the best layout for your vegetable garden. If you live in the city, you should plant vegetables together for easy harvesting. You should plant your vegetables in groups if you live outside of the city. This will ensure maximum yield.

What vegetables can you grow together?

It is possible to grow tomatoes and peppers together, as they like the same soil conditions and temperatures. They work well together as tomatoes need heat to ripen and peppers need lower temperatures for optimal flavor. Plant them together indoors at least six weeks before you plant them. Once the weather gets warmer, transplant your pepper and tomato plants outdoors.

Do I need any special equipment?

Non, really. You only need a trowel, shovel, watering can, and a rake.

What amount of sunlight does a plant require?

It all depends on what kind of plant you have. Some plants need 12 hours direct sunlight each day. Others prefer 8 to 10 hours of indirect sun. Vegetables require at least 10 hours of direct sunlight per 24-hour period.

How do you prepare the soil?

Preparing soil to grow vegetables is very simple. First, remove all weeds in the area where you plan to plant vegetables. Next, add organic matter like composted manure and leaves, grass clippings or straw. Water well, and wait for the plants to sprout.

What's the difference?

Hydroponic gardening uses nutrients-rich water to feed plants. Aquaponics is a system that combines fish tanks and plants to create an ecosystem that is self-sufficient. It's like having your farm right in your home.

How To

Organic fertilizers for your garden

Organic fertilizers are made from natural substances such as manure, compost, fish emulsion, seaweed extract, guano, and blood meal. The term organic refers to the use of non-synthetic materials for their production. Synthetic fertilizers are chemical compounds used in industrial processes. Because they are quick and efficient, synthetic fertilizers are popular in agriculture. They don't require laborious preparation. Synthetic fertilizers are dangerous for the environment as well as human health. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Due to runoff, synthetic fertilizers can pollute both groundwater as well as surface waters. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It is made up of bacteria and enzymes, which break down the waste into simpler compounds that can be absorbed easily by plants.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is rich for nitrogen, carbon, potassium and magnesium. It is extremely porous and holds water well.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It has the ability to dissolve oils, fats and is very similar to soap. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It's a great source of vitamins A and C as well as iodine and iron.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It contains nitrogen, sulfur, chloride and carbon.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also has trace minerals such as phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen and other nutrients.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. One quarter cup of the fertilizer should be spread per square foot. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
