How to Grow Cantaloupe

vegetable gardening guide uf

You can plant cantaloupe seeds only after frost danger has passed. They need warm soil, so they should be planted at least two feet apart. You can also grow them indoors in containers. Cantaloupes are grown either vertically or on a tree. They will spread out so you might want to secure them with a stake or trellis. To grow cantaloupes vertically, you need to place a few seeds on each plant and space them three to four feet apart.

Wrap the cantaloupe bulbs in pantyhose and place them in a cool area. The bulb will develop a sweet, soft smell in about two weeks. After the fruit is fully matured, you can remove the stem from the fruit and keep it in cool storage until it is ready to be harvested. It can be used to make appetizers and for cooking. You can harvest the cantaloupe plants by removing the stems and drying them.

Gardening Tips

Plant cantaloupe seeds indoors two to three weeks after the last frost. The soil should not be below 65 degrees. After the soil temperature reaches 65 degrees, seedlings are ready to be transplanted outdoors within a few weeks. The soil should be a nutrient-rich mix with a good drainage system. The plant should get at least six hours of direct sunlight every day. In colder climates, the soil temperature should be 70 degrees.

Cantaloupes are not attracted to many pests. You must use a product to control weeds if you don't want to have problems later. You can prevent cantaloupes being eaten by mulching them frequently. Styrofoam plates can be placed underneath the cantaloupes by some growers. The old-timers were more knowledgeable than us. In the past, we used to see melons with rotten rinds.

Cantaloupe plants require moist soil, unlike their citrus cousins. The soil should have a pH between 6.5 and 7.5. They should also be planted in biodegradable potting pots. If you don't have the space to plant them in your garden, a container that is biodegradable is the best alternative. If you choose to plant them directly in the ground, ensure that they are spaced at least 18 inches apart.

Cantaloupe is not only easy to grow but also delicious. The peak sugar content of the cantaloupe is the most important factor for its flavor. To get maximum yield, the fruit vines should be placed in a sunny area. A cantaloupe plant needs a good location to grow properly. Ideally, the cantaloupe plant should be planted in a well drained, organic soil.

After you have placed the seedlings into the garden, you can begin to prepare the soil. The soil should be around 70 degrees. Planting cantaloupe plants directly in the garden is possible, aside from the seeds. After the first fruits have ripened, you can transplant them. If you plan to grow cantaloupes indoors, make sure you have enough space so they can spread.

How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. Organic fertilizers are made from non-synthetic materials. Synthetic fertilizers are chemicals that are used in industrial processes. They are widely used in agriculture because they provide nutrients to plants quickly and efficiently without requiring laborious preparation methods. However, synthetic fertilizers present risks to both the environment- and human health. In addition, they require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Due to runoff, synthetic fertilizers can pollute both groundwater as well as surface waters. This pollution is detrimental to humans and wildlife alike.

There are many kinds of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost - a mixture of decaying leaves, grass clippings, vegetable scraps, and animal manure. It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, sulfur. It is extremely porous and holds water well.

* Fish Emulsion - a liquid product derived from fish oil. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It has trace elements such as phosphorous, nitrogen and nitrate.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It is a good source of vitamins A, C, iron, and iodine.

* Guano - excrement from seabirds, bats, reptiles, and amphibians. It contains nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfate, chloride, and carbon.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. If you have only access to the fish oil emulsion, then you can combine 1 part fish emulsion and 2 parts compost.

To apply the fertilizer, spread it evenly over the soil using a shovel or tiller. You should spread about one quarter cup of the fertilizer per square foot. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
