What to do in the January Garden

herb gardening in containers

January plants can be anything from perennials and annuals to herbs or vegetables. You can add sweet peas (sweet pea), roquette, and statice to your garden during this cool period. A few weeks before the last frost, vegetables like spinach and collards should be established. You can also grow edibles such as Swiss chard Bright lights and globe artichokes. Consider growing purple or green oak-leaf leaf lettuce to add colour to your summer flowering annuals.

Everybody wishes everyone a happy and prosperous new year as we enter the new year. You should also remember that winter can damage many garden structures and wildlife need food. You should not cut certain areas of your gardens until the spring, though you can prune plants such wisterias and rhododendrons just above their buds. This will help keep the flowers and foliage looking beautiful for many months.

Now is a good time to plant seeds if your goal is to attract wildlife to the garden. Bird feeders are a great way to get started. A bug hotel is another option. These are a great way for wildlife to be attracted. You can even plant trees during this season. However, you should plan ahead for these tasks. In addition to your wish list, January is the ideal time to plant some trees and shrubs.

Although the weather may not be ideal for gardening, it is possible to take advantage of the colder, drier days by planning ahead. Mulch and protect your soil around your plants' roots if you don’t want to spend too long in the garden. Remember to prune deciduous trees before they leaf out. You should remove any diseased or dead branches, but not too much fruiting timber. Dormant season oil or sprays can be applied to protect against leaf curl, overwintering pest eggs and other problems.

Because it is not too cold to plant, you can still plant in January in Zone 6. If the temperature rises, you can transplant seedlings. If you are planning to plant outside seeds, be sure that they are covered with row covers. The seeds can be direct-sown with coleus and geranium, or you can plant early in the month.

Bare-root is also possible for plants that are winter dormant. Roses, deciduous plants, and wisteria all qualify. If you're unsure how to plant artichokes correctly, you can even plant them as bare-root. It is important to make sure they are properly soaked. They will not last very long if they are weak. These will allow you to plant them as soon as possible.

FAQ

How can I tell what kind of soil is mine?

The color of the soil can tell you how much organic matter it contains. Organic matter is more abundant in dark soils than those with lighter colors. Soil testing is another option. These tests are used to determine the quantity of nutrients in soil.

What is a plant calendar?

A planting calendar is a list of plants that should be planted at different times throughout the year. The goal is to maximise growth while minimizing stress. For example, early spring crops such as peas, spinach, and lettuce should be sown after the last frost date. Spring crops later include squash, cucumbers, summer beans, and squash. Fall crops include potatoes, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower and broccoli.

How much space do vegetable gardens need?

The rule of thumb is to use 1/2 pound seed per square foot. Therefore, 100 pounds of seeds is required for a surface of 10 feet x 10 feet (3 m x 3 m).
