FAQ

What is a planting schedule?

A planting plan is a list of plants to be planted at different times each year. The goal is to maximise growth while minimizing stress. The last frost date should be used to sow early spring crops, such as spinach, lettuce, and beans. Cucumbers, squash, and spring beans are later crops. Fall crops include potatoes, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower and broccoli.

What is the most important thing to do before you start a new garden?

Preparing the soil is the most important step in starting a garden. This involves adding organic matter, such as composted soil, grass clippings and leaves, straw or other material, to help provide nutrients for the plants. Next, plant seedlings or seeds in the prepared holes. Finally, make sure to water thoroughly.

How do I determine the type of soil that I have?

The color of the soil can tell you how much organic matter it contains. Organic matter is more abundant in dark soils than those with lighter colors. You can also do soil tests. These tests determine the amount of nutrients in the soil.

How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made from natural substances such as manure, compost, fish emulsion, seaweed extract, guano, and blood meal. The term organic refers to the use of non-synthetic materials for their production. Synthetic fertilizers can be used in industrial processes. These fertilizers are commonly used in agriculture, as they can provide nutrients to plants quickly without the need for complicated preparation. Synthetic fertilizers are dangerous for the environment as well as human health. In addition, they require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Runoff from synthetic fertilizers can also pollute groundwater and surface water. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion - a liquid product derived from fish oil. It dissolves fats and oils in a similar way to soap. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract - a concentrated solution of minerals extracted from kelp, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. It provides a source of vitamins A and C, iodine, and iron.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It contains nitrogen, sulfur, chloride and carbon.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It's rich in protein and can be used to feed poultry and other animals. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

To apply the fertilizer, spread it evenly over the soil using a shovel or tiller. You should spread about one quarter cup of the fertilizer per square foot. To see signs of new growth, you'll need more fertilizer each two weeks.
