FAQ

Does my backyard have enough space for a garden?

If you don’t yet have a vegetable gardening, you might wonder if it will be possible. The answer is yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. You just need to plan. Raised beds can be built as low as 6 inches. Or, you could use containers instead of raised beds. You'll still get lots of produce.

Can I grow fruit tree in a pot?

Yes! Fruit trees can be grown in pots if you're short on space. Your pot should have drainage holes to ensure that the tree doesn't get rotted by excess moisture. Make sure the pot is deep enough for the root ball to be held. This will protect the tree from being stressed.

What month is the best time to start a garden?

From April to June is the best season for vegetables. This is when soil is at its warmest and plants are growing the fastest. If you live outside of a warm climate, you might be better off waiting until July or August.

How can I tell what kind of soil is mine?

The color of the soil can tell you how much organic matter it contains. Organic matter is more abundant in dark soils than those with lighter colors. Soil testing is another option. These tests assess the soil's nutritional content.

What kind of lighting works best for growing plants indoors?

Florescent lights work well for growing plants indoors because they emit less heat than incandescent bulbs. They can also provide steady lighting without flickering and dimming. Fluorescent bulbs can be purchased in regular and compact fluorescent versions. CFLs are up to 75% cheaper than traditional bulbs.

What's the difference?

Hydroponic gardening relies on nutrient rich water rather than soil to provide nutrients for plants. Aquaponics combines fish tanks with plants to create a self-sufficient ecosystem. It's like having a farm right in your backyard.

When should you plant flowers?

Spring is the best season to plant flowers. It is when the temperatures are warmer and the soil is still moist. If you live outside of a warm climate, it is best not to plant flowers until the first frost. The ideal temperature for indoor plants is around 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

How To

Organic fertilizers for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. The term organic refers to the use of non-synthetic materials for their production. Synthetic fertilizers are chemical compounds used in industrial processes. Because they are quick and efficient, synthetic fertilizers are popular in agriculture. They don't require laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Runoff from synthetic fertilizers can also pollute groundwater and surface water. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are many types of organic fertilizers.

* Manure - produced when livestock eat food containing nitrogen (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost is a mixture of vegetable scraps and grass clippings, animal manure, and decaying leaves. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion - a liquid product derived from fish oil. It dissolves fats and oils in a similar way to soap. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract – A concentrated solution containing minerals extracted from kelp. It is a good source of vitamins A, C, iron, and iodine.

* Guano - Excreta from amphibians and seabirds. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal - The remains of animals slaughtered. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also has trace minerals such as phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen and other nutrients.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

To apply the fertilizer, spread it evenly over the soil using a shovel or tiller. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
