FAQ

Can I grow fruit trees in pots?

Yes! If you have limited space, fruit trees can be grown indoors. Ensure your pot has drainage holes so excess moisture won't rot the tree. The pot should be deep enough to hold the rootball. This will keep the tree from becoming stressed.

What month is the best time to start a garden?

The best time to plant vegetables is from April through June. This is when the soil gets warmest, and plants tend to grow quickly. You might want to wait until July/August if you live in a cold area.

When to plant flowers

Spring is the best season to plant flowers. It is when the temperatures are warmer and the soil is still moist. If you live in colder climates, it is best to plant flowers after the first frost. The ideal temperature for growing plants indoors is around 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

What is the best vegetable garden layout?

The location of your home will dictate the layout of your vegetable garden. If you live in the city, you should plant vegetables together for easy harvesting. You should plant your vegetables in groups if you live outside of the city. This will ensure maximum yield.

Which seeds should start indoors?

A tomato seed is the best for indoor gardening. Tomatoes are easy to grow, and they produce fruit all year round. When growing tomatoes in pots, be careful when transplanting them into the ground. Planting too soon can cause soil to dry out and root rot. Also, be aware of diseases such as bacterial wilt, which can kill plants quickly.

How do I determine the type of soil that I have?

It is easy to tell the difference by the color of your dirt. The soil color will tell you if it contains more organic matter than the lighter ones. Soil testing is another option. These tests are used to determine the quantity of nutrients in soil.

How To

Organic fertilizers for your garden

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. Organic fertilizers are made from non-synthetic materials. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. They are widely used in agriculture because they provide nutrients to plants quickly and efficiently without requiring laborious preparation methods. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. To produce, synthetic fertilizers require a lot of energy and water. Runoff from synthetic fertilizers can also pollute groundwater and surface water. This is a problem for wildlife and humans alike.

There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria, enzymes, and other substances that break down the waste into simple compounds which can be easily absorbed by plants.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion: A liquid product derived primarily from fish oil. It has the ability to dissolve oils, fats and is very similar to soap. It also contains trace elements, phosphorous and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract – A concentrated solution containing minerals extracted from kelp. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It contains nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfate, chloride, and carbon.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains trace minerals, phosphorus and potassium.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. To see signs of new growth, you'll need more fertilizer each two weeks.
