FAQ

When to plant flowers

Spring is the best season to plant flowers. It is when the temperatures are warmer and the soil is still moist. If you live in a cold area, plant flowers only after the first frost. The ideal temperature for indoor gardening is 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

What is a planting calendar?

A planting schedule is a list listing the dates when plants should be planted. The goal is for plants to grow at their best while minimizing stress. So, for example, spring crops such as lettuce, spinach, or peas should not be sown before the last frost date. Squash, cucumbers, and summer beans are some of the later spring crops. Fall crops include carrots and cabbage, broccoli, cauliflowers, kale, potatoes, and others.

Do I need special equipment to grow vegetables in my garden?

Non, really. All you need to do is use a shovel, trowels, watering containers, and maybe even a rake.

What type of lighting is best to grow plants indoors?

Florescent lights work well for growing plants indoors because they emit less heat than incandescent bulbs. They are also consistent in lighting, and do not flicker or dimm. Fluorescent bulbs come in both compact fluorescent (CFL) and regular varieties. CFLs use up to 75% less energy than traditional bulbs.

What vegetables are good to grow together?

Because they are both fond of similar soil conditions and temperatures, it is easy to grow peppers and tomatoes together. They work well together as tomatoes need heat to ripen and peppers need lower temperatures for optimal flavor. Plant them together indoors at least six weeks before you plant them. After the weather has warmed up, you can transplant the pepper plants and tomatoes outside.

What is the best way to determine what kind of soil I have?

You can tell by looking at the color of the dirt. Organic matter is more abundant in dark soils than those with lighter colors. Soil testing is another option. These tests assess the soil's nutritional content.

What is the difference between hydroponic gardening and aquaponic gardening?

Hydroponic gardening makes use of nutrient-rich water rather than soil to grow plants. Aquaponics blends fish tanks with plants to create a self sufficient ecosystem. You can have your farm right at your house!

How To

Organic fertilizers to be used in the garden

Organic fertilizers can be made from natural substances, such as compost, manure and seaweed extract. The term "organic" means that they are produced using non-synthetic material. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. Synthetic fertilizers are used widely in agriculture as they supply nutrients quickly and efficiently to plants without the need for laborious preparation. Synthetic fertilizers are dangerous for the environment as well as human health. To produce, synthetic fertilizers require a lot of energy and water. Due to runoff, synthetic fertilizers can pollute both groundwater as well as surface waters. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich with nitrogen, phosphorus. potassium, calcium. magnesium. sulfur. iron. copper. manganese. molybdenum. chlorine. and carbon. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion: A liquid product derived primarily from fish oil. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It has trace elements such as phosphorous, nitrogen and nitrate.

* Seaweed Extract - a concentrated solution of minerals extracted from kelp, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano, excrement taken from amphibians, bats, reptiles and seabirds. It contains nitrogen, sulfur, chloride and carbon.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It's rich in protein and can be used to feed poultry and other animals. It also contains phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, and trace minerals.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
