How To

How to grow basil

Basil is one of your most versatile herbs. Basil is great for flavoring foods, including soups, sauces and pastas. Here are some tips for growing basil indoors at home.

  1. Choose your location carefully. Basil is an annual and will not live more than one season if it isn't in the right spot. It can tolerate partial shade but prefers full sun. If you want to grow it outside choose an area that is well-ventilated.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should be planted at least two weeks before the last frost date. Place the seeds 1/2 inch deep into small pots containing potting mix. Cover the pots with clear plastic wrap and keep the pots in a warm area out of direct sunlight. Germination usually takes about 10 days. After they have germinated move them into a cool, shaded place where the temperature stays around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Once the seedlings are big enough to handle, transplant them. Take off the plastic wrap and transfer the seedlings to larger containers. Each container should be filled with potting mix. To help remove excess moisture, add gravel or pebbles. As needed, add more potting mixture. Place the containers outside in direct light or in a sunny area. Mist the plants daily to prevent wilting.
  4. After frost danger has passed, add a thick layer to mulch. This will keep them warm and prevent water loss.
  5. You should water your plants often. Basil needs to be watered regularly in order for it to thrive. You can use a rain gauge or a water gauge to determine the amount of water that your plants need. Use a timer, which will turn off the irrigation when there is no rain.
  6. Pick your basil when it reaches its prime. For bushier growth, pick leaves more often.
  7. The leaves can be dried on paper towels or screens. Dry the leaves in glass jars and bags in the fridge.
