How To

How to grow basil

Basil is one herb you can use to make many different dishes in your kitchen. Basil is great for flavouring dishes, as well as adding flavor to soups and sauces, pasta, and desserts. Here are some tips to grow basil indoors.

  1. It is important to choose the right location. Basil is an annual plant and will only live one season if it's not in the right place. It can tolerate partial shade but prefers full sun. If you are growing it outside, choose a spot with good air circulation.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should always be planted at least 2 weeks before the last frost date. In small pots with potting mixture, sow seeds about 1/2 inch deep. Wrap the pots with clear plastic and place them in a sunny area. Germination usually takes about ten days. Once the pots are germinated, you can move them to a place where temperatures remain around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Once the seedlings are big enough to handle, transplant them. The plastic wrap should be removed and the seedlings transplanted into larger containers. To drain excess moisture, fill each container with potting mixture. Add more potting mix as needed. Place the containers outside in direct light or in a sunny area. Mist the plants regularly to keep them from wilting.
  4. After frost danger has passed, add a thick layer to mulch. This will protect the plants from freezing weather and decrease water loss.
  5. Water the plants regularly. Basil needs regular watering to thrive. You can use a rain gauge or a water gauge to determine the amount of water that your plants need. Use a timer, which will turn off the irrigation when there is no rain.
  6. Take your basil out at the peak of its life. To encourage bushier growth, pick the leaves often.
  7. Use paper towels or screens to dry the leaves. Keep the dried leaves in glass containers or bags in a refrigerator.
