How to grow basil

Basil is one of the most versatile herbs you can use in your kitchen. Basil can be used to flavor dishes and add flavor to sauces, soups, pasta, and desserts. These are some great tips to grow basil indoors.

  1. Choose your location carefully. Basil is an annual plant that will only survive one season if placed in the correct place. Basil likes full sunlight but can be tolerant of partial shade. If you are growing it outside, choose a spot with good air circulation.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds must be planted at the latest two weeks before last frost. Plant the seeds in small pots that are 1/2 inch deep. Place the pots in clear plastic wrap. Keep them out of direct sunlight. Germination typically takes around ten days. After they have germinated move them into a cool, shaded place where the temperature stays around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Once the seedlings are big enough to handle, transplant them. Take off the plastic wrap and transfer the seedlings to larger containers. Pour the potting mix into each container. Add gravel or pebbles to drain excess moisture. Add more potting mixes as necessary. The containers should be placed in a sunny location or under indirect lighting. The plants should be misted daily to prevent them from wilting.
  4. Apply a thick layer mulch to the top of your plants after the danger of frost has passed. This will protect them from cold weather and reduce water loss.
  5. You should water your plants often. Basil needs to be hydrated regularly to ensure its survival. To determine how much water your plants require, use a rain gauge. You can also use a timer for the irrigation system to be turned off during dry spells.
  6. When your basil reaches its peak, pick it. For bushier growth, pick leaves more often.
  7. The leaves can be dried on paper towels or screens. Keep the dried leaves in glass containers or bags in a refrigerator.
