When the houseplants' leaves emerge from dormancy, you can feed them in the spring. Indoor plants should be fed approximately once every two or three months. If winter is slow, you should only fertilize plants once or twice per year. Fertilizers of full strength can be toxic to plants. You should dilute your food to make it more suitable for your plants. Half strength fertilizers are sufficient for two to three plants. For summertime feeding, use liquid plant food.

Organic fertilizers are made in a manner similar to synthetic products. These fertilizers contain either fish meal pellets, or cotton seed meal. Other organic fertilizers for your plants are feather meal, cotton seed meal, and alfalfa pellets. For example, alfalfa pellets contain triacontanol, a hormone that promotes growth. Water-soluble fertilizer is another type of organic fertilizer. Water-soluble fertilizer is direct to your plant's roots.

For potted plants, liquid feeds are best. They are high in Potash and promote lush blooms. Liquid feeds are available ready-to-use or as concentrated liquids. You can simply add them to your plant's watering container to be used on bare plants. Liquid feeds for fruit and vegetables are particularly nutritious. This nitrogen content will allow you to grow healthy, leafy plants. Remember to feed your fruit and vegetable plants with liquid plant food after they begin flowering.

Plant nutrients are vital for optimal growth, just like people. Plants, like people need certain nutrients to survive. There are three types if nutrients: macronutrients and secondary nutrients. Macronutrients are most essential for plants, but they don't have to be the only ones. You'll also need to give them adequate amounts of minerals, vitamins, and other nutrients to ensure they grow healthily.

How To

Organic fertilizers for your garden

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. Organic fertilizers are made from non-synthetic materials. Synthetic fertilizers can be used in industrial processes. Synthetic fertilizers are used widely in agriculture as they supply nutrients quickly and efficiently to plants without the need for laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This is a problem for wildlife and humans alike.

There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria, enzymes, and other substances that break down the waste into simple compounds which can be easily absorbed by plants.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It is highly porous so it can retain moisture well and release nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It can dissolve oils and fats, similar to soap. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It is rich in vitamins A, C and iodine as well as iron.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It contains nitrogen, sulfur, chloride and carbon.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also contains trace minerals, phosphorus and potassium.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix well. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. If you only have the fish-emulsion you can substitute one with another.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
