How to Use Straw Bale Vegetable gardening Technique

garden planting tips

Straw bale garden is an option for those who want to grow their own vegetables, herbs or flowers. The growing medium can be created easily and is free, which is a big advantage over traditional gardening methods. You must condition your bales before you can plant vegetables or herbs. This requires soaking the bales in water daily for at least three days. As a result, they begin to heat up and decompose.

Once the bales have cooled down, the planting surface should be cut to allow water and nutrients to penetrate the bales. Moisture encourages the growth of bacteria which is essential for the decomposition and maintenance of plants. Soaking the bales will also help to provide ample nutrients for the plants. To prevent weeds or other problems, it is important to plow the soil around the bales regularly.

You can start planting once the ground has been prepared. The bales provide ample space for seedlings. To make sure the seedlings fit, you can use a sharp trowel. You should not plant your seedlings any deeper than their nursery container. Place taller plants towards the back, so that they don’t shade the lower ones. You can also stake them with long stakes to ensure they don't fall.

After the bales had been soaked in water, you can apply balanced fertilizer. It can either be synthetic or organic. You can apply this fertilizer for 2 weeks and then water the plants well. The bales should feel warm, crumbly and dry. If they don't, they may need to continue composting for another few days. The outside temperatures will also affect this. The bales should be watered every day. To encourage soil to absorb the fertilizer, add one cup to each bale.

Straw bale gardening can be a good option for those who are unable to work with too rich soil. You can use straw bales for mulch, soil, or even compost. They will be rich in organic material once the straw is gone. After a few seasons, you can gather the bales and then compost them. You'll be so glad you did.

Once you've conditioned the bales, it's time to fertilize them. For the first four days, you should sprinkle a cup of ammonium sulfate (21-0-0) or half a cup of urea (46-0-0). The number after fertilizer names indicates the nitrogen, potash, and phosphorus content. The higher the number, the better; higher the nitrogen content, the faster the bales decompose and condition.

How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers are made from natural substances such as manure, compost, fish emulsion, seaweed extract, guano, and blood meal. Organic fertilizers are made from non-synthetic materials. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. They are widely used in agriculture because they provide nutrients to plants quickly and efficiently without requiring laborious preparation methods. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This is a problem for wildlife and humans alike.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure is created when livestock eat foods containing nitrogen (a nutrient for plants). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is highly porous so it can retain moisture well and release nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It can dissolve oils and fats, similar to soap. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract - a concentrated solution of minerals extracted from kelp, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. It is a good source of vitamins A, C, iron, and iodine.

* Guano - excrement from seabirds, bats, reptiles, and amphibians. It contains nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfate, chloride, and carbon.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains trace minerals, phosphorus and potassium.

Make organic fertilizer by combining equal parts manure, fish emulsion, and compost. Mix well. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. If you only have the fish-emulsion you can substitute one with another.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
