The fennel plant is a perennial herb in the carrot family. It is characterized by yellow flowers and feathery leaves. It is an endangered species that was originally found on the Mediterranean coast, but has expanded to many other places. It prefers sandy, dry soil close to the riverbanks or sea-coast. Its sweet, fragrant scent has made it a popular choice in the culinary realm. Consider growing fennel in your yard or garden.

Fennel bulbs are easy to grow from seed. Fennel bulbs can be grown from seeds and planted in either pots or modules in the middle to late spring. As each bulb is small, it is best if you only plant one bulb per small pot. To minimize bolting, thin the seeds by 12 inches if you transplant a Fennel plant from another site. You may be able to grow it in containers depending on the exact location of your new Fennel plant.

Start with the seeds when you are ready for your fennel plants to be planted. If you plan on planting your seeds outdoors, be sure to space them at least 12" apart. To avoid seeds from getting bruised, the soil should be thin enough. If you intend to transplant the whole plant, you can cover it with row covers to protect them from the cold. After the fennel plants grow, you can put the entire plant in a container.

You should start the fennel plant from seeds. The seeds are semi-flat and round. There are two sizes: full-size and baby. You can either start seedlings outdoors or indoors. The plants won't thrive in shade and require full sunlight. Powdery mildew can also be treated with an organic insecticide. Follow these steps if you plan to grow fennel inside your home.

Fennel plants also need to be well-drained. Fennel flowers prefer full sun. However, they can live in partial shade. To encourage growth, it is recommended to water the sprigs regularly with a liquid fertilizer. For fennel to stay healthy, it needs regular fertilization. To ensure proper growth, the fennel bulb must be kept moist.

How To

Organic fertilizers to be used in the garden

Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. The term "organic" means that they are produced using non-synthetic material. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. In addition, they require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Moreover, many synthetic fertilizers pollute groundwater and surface waters due to runoff. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It contains bacteria, enzymes, and other substances that break down the waste into simple compounds which can be easily absorbed by plants.

* Compost - a mixture of decaying leaves, grass clippings, vegetable scraps, and animal manure. It is rich for nitrogen, carbon, potassium and magnesium. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It can dissolve oils and fats, similar to soap. It has trace elements such as phosphorous, nitrogen and nitrate.

* Seaweed Extract - a concentrated solution of minerals extracted from kelp, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. It is a good source of vitamins A, C, iron, and iodine.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium as well as sodium, magnesium, sulfate and chloride.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also has trace minerals such as phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen and other nutrients.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. You can substitute one with another if you don't have access to all three ingredients. If you have only access to the fish oil emulsion, then you can combine 1 part fish emulsion and 2 parts compost.

To apply the fertilizer, spread it evenly over the soil using a shovel or tiller. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
