FAQ

Which is the best layout for a vegetable garden?

It all depends on where you live. Plant vegetables together if your house is in a busy area. However, if you live in a rural area, you should space out your plants for maximum yield.

Do I have enough space to plant a vegetable or fruit garden in my backyard?

If you don’t have a garden yet, you may wonder if there is enough room to start one. The answer is yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. It takes just a little planning. For instance, raised beds could be constructed only 6 inches high. Containers can be used in place of raised beds. You will still have plenty of produce, regardless of which method you choose.

How do I determine the type of soil that I have?

By looking at the dirt's color, you can tell. You will find more organic matter in darker soils that those of lighter colors. Soil testing is another option. These tests can measure the soil's nutrients.

How To

Basil growing tips

Basil is one herb you can use to make many different dishes in your kitchen. Basil is great for flavouring dishes, as well as adding flavor to soups and sauces, pasta, and desserts. These are some helpful tips to help you grow basil indoors.

  1. Choose your location carefully. Basil is an evergreen plant. If it's not located in the right area, it will only last one season. It can tolerate partial shade but prefers full sun. If you're growing it outside, find a spot that has good air circulation.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should not be planted more than two weeks prior to the last frost date. Plant the seeds in small pots that are 1/2 inch deep. Place the pots in clear plastic wrap. Keep them out of direct sunlight. Germination usually takes about 10 days. Once they are germinated, transfer them to a protected area where the temperatures are at 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Once the seedlings are big enough to handle, transplant them. Take off the plastic wrap and transfer the seedlings to larger containers. Each container should be filled with potting mix. To help remove excess moisture, add gravel or pebbles. Add more potting mixes as necessary. Place the containers in indirect or sunny light. Mist the plants daily to prevent wilting.
  4. After frost danger has passed, add a thick layer to mulch. This will protect them against cold weather and reduce water losses.
  5. You should water your plants often. Basil needs regular watering to thrive. Use a rain gauge to check how much water the plants need. Also, use a timer to turn off the irrigation system during dry spells automatically.
  6. Pick your basil when it reaches its prime. Pick leaves frequently to encourage bushier growth.
  7. Dry the leaves on paper towels or screens. Place the leaves in glass jars, bags or in the refrigerator.
