FAQ

What month should I start a vegetable garden?

It is best to plant vegetables between April and June. This is when the soil gets warmest, and plants tend to grow quickly. If you live somewhere cold, it is best to wait until July or august.

When is it best to plant herbs?

Plant herbs in spring when the soil temperatures are 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Plant them in full sun for best results. To grow basil indoors you need to place the seedlings inside pots that have been filled with potting soil. Once they start sprouting leaves, keep them out from direct sunlight. Once plants start growing, move them into bright indirect light. After about three weeks, transplant them to individual containers and continue to water them regularly.

Do I need to buy special equipment to grow vegetables?

It's not true. A shovel, trowel and watering container are all you need.

What seeds should be started indoors?

A tomato seed is the best for indoor gardening. Tomatoes grow quickly and bear good fruit all year. If you are growing tomatoes in pots, take care when you transplant them to the ground. Planting tomatoes too early can lead to soil drying out which could lead roots to rot. Also, be aware of diseases such as bacterial wilt, which can kill plants quickly.

When to plant flowers

When the weather is milder and the soil has a good moisture content, spring is the best time to plant flowers. If you live somewhere cold, planting flowers should be done before the first frost. The ideal temperature indoors for plants is around 60°F.

Does my backyard have enough room for a vegetable garden?

If you don’t have a garden yet, you may wonder if there is enough room to start one. The answer is yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. It just takes some planning. For example, you can build raised beds just 6 inches high. You can also use containers as raised beds. You'll still get lots of produce.

How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. Organic fertilizers are made from non-synthetic materials. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. Synthetic fertilizers are used widely in agriculture as they supply nutrients quickly and efficiently to plants without the need for laborious preparation. Synthetic fertilizers can pose risks to the environment and human health. In addition, they require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria, enzymes, and other substances that break down the waste into simple compounds which can be easily absorbed by plants.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is rich with nitrogen, phosphorus. potassium, calcium. magnesium. sulfur. iron. copper. manganese. molybdenum. chlorine. and carbon. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion: A liquid product derived primarily from fish oil. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed Oil - A concentrated mixture of minerals taken from kelp, red and brown algae, as well as green algae. It provides a source of vitamins A and C, iodine, and iron.

* Guano - Excreta from amphibians and seabirds. It contains nitrogen, sulfur, chloride and carbon.

* Blood Meal - the remains of slaughtered animals. It's rich in protein and can be used to feed poultry and other animals. It also contains trace minerals, phosphorus and potassium.

For organic fertilizer mix equal amounts of manure, compost and/or fishemulsion. Mix thoroughly. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

To apply the fertilizer, spread it evenly over the soil using a shovel or tiller. You should spread about one quarter cup of the fertilizer per square foot. You will need more fertilizer to see signs and growth every two weeks.
